Welcome to my woodshed. Step inside.

Dreams of Horses mentioned my woodshed in his comment on my last post and asked if there were any thoughts of getting it in “working order” this spring. So I headed back there to check it out and see just what it might take to get it in working order.

Well, right now it’s definitely not quite ready for recreational use. The set of eight deck chairs, deck umbrella, and a lawn mower make it rather cramped quarters. It’s so funny that it’s our woodshed and the only wood we have in it is some spare fence posts. Well, hopefully that will change once we get a woodstove (crosses fingers), but in the meantime, when we set up the deck furniture again, there will be plenty of free space.

No woodshed spanking fun could take place today in any case as I have a shoot on Saturday. I wouldn’t want to risk marking (whippy switches do that!) nor do I want to start the day off already sore. I have a feeling I’ll be plenty sore without a headstart. Still, I was able to test the privacy level of the woodshed and take a few bare bottom shots.

I’m happy to report that the privacy level is excellent even with the trees still bare. Good thing!

For The "Shear" Fun Of It

I received a present in the mail the other day. No, not candy this time (darn!) but a very nice pair of pruning shears along with a little note. I promised to use them well and have photos to prove it.

I headed out with the shears, my camera, and a tripod, waved to my rather nosey new neighbor, and headed into the woods (can you tell yet how much I love being outdoors?) I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be able to find anything resembling a good switch because 1) the woods still look pretty dead and 2) I’ve never had to cut a switch without someone along to point out what one to cut.

I couldn’t find anything other than dried out twigs on the trees and was about to give up when I discovered some sort of plant sporting nice thorn-free, switch-like shoots. Just the right diameter, flexible, perfect. The shears worked beautifully to clip and trim my find.

Now since I was out there alone, I didn’t have anyone to actually test out the switch on my bottom. I made a valiant effort to test it on myself but a switch isn’t easy to control when swatting at your own backside. I ended up missing my butt and having it wrap around my thigh on impact and that was quite enough of that! The next time I head out to make use of the shears, I’ll be sure to bring along someone to help me out.

More Outdoor Fun

I’ve been taking advantage of the beautiful spring weather we continue to have by heading back to the reservoir whenever I can. As I was hiking on Tuesday, I heard a very loud noise that sounded like a car engine struggling to turn over, but how could that be in the middle of the woods? I walked a little farther and found the source of the racket in a swampy section. I’m not sure if these guys are frogs or toads, but there were hundreds of them jumping around, sunning themselves, and croaking at the top of their lungs. This little one came up close to me to get his picture taken … or maybe he just wanted to get away from his noisy friends.

Much like my new amphibian pals, I get cold very easily, even when others around me are perfectly comfortable. My friends kid me about it saying I need to sun myself like a lizard on a rock to get warm. Not a bad idea. Nothing like feeling a little sun on my bum.

Take A Hike!

Yesterday was beautiful – sunny and in the 60s. Perfect for a nice hike at the reservoir.

While most people like to take the perimeter trail, I much prefer going off trail where it’s quieter and more scenic. Of course there’s a greater chance of getting lost that way … and as navigationally challenged as I am, the odds are definitely not in my favor.

Thankfully, my boyfriend was with me so I thought for certain we wouldn’t get lost. But when even he got turned around a bit, I couldn’t help but make a few wise comments. He then decided the best policy was to speak softly and carry a big stick (literally) to smack my butt with. Gotta love the great outdoors.

The reservoir used to be farmland in 1800′s and early 1900′s and some of the old stone foundations of houses and barns are still standing in the woods, fields, and abandoned orchard.
