Sometimes a tiny detail can make all the difference. I’ve been known to fall in love with a song for the way a harmony is sung or includes a single lyric that resonates with me. In a similar way, a spanking scene can go from good to great if it captures even a fleeting yet powerful detail. I know that I’m far from alone in constantly searching for that certain something, but what that “certain something” is tends to be different for each of us.
It can be a the way the spankee’s bottom lip trembles when she knows she’s about to get spanked. Or a word a spanker uses during the lecture. Something as basic as the implement that is chosen for punishment. Or as is often the case, it can have little to do with the spanking itself and be a seemingly minor detail to most.
I’ve received a number of comments and emails over the past few years from people specifying what their spanking hot button is – what detail really makes a scene for them – and of course requesting the inclusion of more material that satisfies their desire. Here is a short (ok, maybe not so short) list of some that have been mentioned to me.
shoes – mary janes, saddle shoes, high heels, flats, platforms, flip flops, Teva sports sandals, boots, barefoot
socks – knee socks, knee socks that aren’t white, ankle socks, athletic socks with stripes at the top, lacy socks, socks with little pom poms on the ankle
panties – I know I’ve had many a blog post on this never ending debate about the preferred style of panty
hair – long hair, short hair, curly hair, straight hair, hair in pig tails, hair in a pony tail, hairstyle of the spankee, hairstyle of the spanker, hair errrm down there, hair, Hair, HAIR!
accessories – hoop earrings, barrettes, panty hose, thigh highs, rings, nail polish, lack of any accessories
clothing in general – school uniforms, bathing suits, cheerleading outfits, rain coats, dresses, jeans, pajamas, low cut tops on the bottoms and high cut shorts on the tops (this is getting confusing), not a stitch of material at all
positions – not just OTK versus bent over, but how the spanker and spankee are angled, a particular piece of furniture that is used as a prop, the spankee’s struggle to get out of position, the spanker’s struggle to get the spankee back into position
resemblance – how much a spankee or spanker looks like someone famous or reminds you of someone you know – a favorite teacher, your strict stepmom, that brat at the grocery store checkout that always snaps her gum and rolls her eyes and probably deserves a good spanking
storyline - the bad girl, the good girl, the innocent victim, the brat, the boss, the role reversal, a specific offense, talking back, eager submission
everything else – a look, a way of kicking, a word, a hair flip, a color of clothing, inclusion of other punishments such as corner time, mouth soaping, line writing, etc.
And that’s just to name a few!
These hot buttons cover a fairly wide range of interests and can often conflict with one another. But that’s because we are all highly individualized with our own set of unique ideals even though we may all fall under the greater umbrella of spanking enthusiasts. There is none that is wrong nor right. It’s all about personal preference. I’ve listed several hot buttons that have been shared with me (and a few of my own mixed in there as well), but what are yours? Do tell.

One of my hot buttons is seeing a spanking scene end with corner time. That makes the scene so much better for me since I am a big fan of corner time. I really like it if the length of time in the corner is mentioned. Because just sending a naughty girl off to the corner is one thing, but if I know she is going to be standing there for an hour, that makes it that much more exciting for me to imagine how long she will be there with her bare bottom on display.

For me the most important thing is not actually position, or implements, or clothing, though all these can add to the scene. But the crucial element is the dynamic between the top and the bottom: I like a quiet-spoken, authoritative top and a bottom who knows she’s done wrong and recognises the top’s right to punish her. Of course there may be protest and resistance, but at the end there’s acceptance and contrition.

For me, the most important thing is the ending. To see a top go from strict to sympathetic and loving toward the bottom is my major hot button. I like to see hugs and soothing words, comforting the girl who was just spanked. Especially if there is tears. That’s a pretty extensive and complete list above. Basically, I guess it could be said that just about ANYTHING could be the fuse, trigger, or hot button for someone.
The key is finding or possibly sharing your hot button with your significant spanker or spankee.

Interaction wise, being called “young lady” does it and I have found my future husband has NO PROBLEM responding when I plead,

I love seeing spanking in “period clothing”, esp from like the victorian or prior periods – women in old fashioed “bloomers’ and the like. kelly Payne did an excellent barn spanking video and photo set on this theme set in like the 1800s or so.
Costumes are wonderful – like the ones Ms Amber Wells is seen wearing in hers memebers section on punished brats. the Pirate outfit, the one she is wearing that has the hearts on the stockings – my very, very, favorite of her.
I also have a huge fetish for women in garter belts and stockings either being spanked or spanking – 1950′s style under cloths.
I also like spanking furniture – special made benches and stools for the spankkee to bend over or kneel on, or to sit on before or after a spanking in the corner.
Paddles are my key spanking fetish instrument, maybe because it was what I knew about and heard about as a kid, in school and in homes. Hair brushes are also a big fetish for me.

Reading all this makes me aware that I have a LOT of hot buttons. Very similar to “D” above and many others here. I would add that the personality and look of the spankee makes a big difference for me. If I like the model, I probably have lots of reasons to like the scene. Another hot button is the accuracy of the spanking and color/marks it leaves. I like any small touches that make the scene intimately domestic, and a scenario where a modern girl is confronted with an “old-fashioned” scene. It’s hot if I know the scene is difficult for the spankee, but she’s really into it. I could go on… and on and on. lol. Another excellent topic, Pixie. Words can be a hot button for me. I can be reading something that I think is non-fetish. But, if I come across the word “lecture,” for example, I’m suddenly back in that certain frame of mind. A whole scenario is created.
Words can literally flip the switch out of nowhere.
As you say, it’s all about preference. Then again, I associate the word “preference” with understanding, the ‘nothing is wrong’ sweetness of Pixie which keeps calling me back..:)

I’ll second AzSpanks on the historical/ period spankings idea. I have one particular punishment in mind: the public punishment Jeanne de Valois received in France in 1786, as depicted (in a PG-13 way) in the 2001 film “The Affair of the Necklace.”
The Comtesse de la Motte, as she was called, was sentenced to be publicly birched and branded “naked” for swindling. The sentence was carried out in front of a crowd of people outdoors. I would love to see PB depict the “birching” part.
I would also love to see some spankings set in the 1950s.

Nothing beats bare feet and moments where both legs are kicking straight up abruptly. As for clothing, jeans or pajamas are the best at the start, progressing to being bare, with clothing pulled down, not off. And yes, cornertime is hot, too.
Its also better if the temp of spanking changes wildly without the spanker giving a prior indication via change of tone.
One final point: sniffling and the inability for the spankee to object coherently, is also good , as tears would be so much easier to fake.

Several of the others’ examples have nailed some of my hot buttons, and landed close to some others. Some of my own contradict each other. In no particular order….
An attitude of reluctant acceptance on the part of the spankee: Whether admitting it or not, s/he has to believe deep down that the spanking is deserved.
Scenarios in which the spanking truly is for the spankee’s “own good.”
When the spankee has to bare her (or his) own bottom, and get into position.
Conversely, I also like when the spankee goes OTK with undies up, thinks, “Well, at least I’m not getting it bare,” only to have that comfort crumble upon feeling the spanker’s fingers sliding under the waistband.
“Young lady” / “young man.”
Straight to the bare.
When not straight to the bare, spanking begins with hand on underwear, pauses, then continues with with hairbrush on bare (what I call the “double upgrade”).
Spanking by friend’s parent (must be mom for /m scenarios).
Bare-bottom OTK spanking is just about to start, and spanker has to take a phone call. Spankee stays over lap during conversation, wondering how long this stay-of-execution will last. Spankee also hopes spanker will not mention what is about to happen to person on other end of phone call.
After spanking, spankee semi-reluctantly shows red bottom to sibling or friend.
I also like the scenario of the uninvolved third party (e.g., next-door-neighbor) walking in during bare-bottom corner time — but for me I like it to be pre-spanking BBCT.
A few major ones, for me:
When the spankee feels guilty, confesses to a misdeed and *asks* to be spanked. (As unrealistic as it may be, for the scene to “work” for me, the spanker has to be a traditional authority figure, not a spouse / lover in a DD relationship, and the spankee must asking nervously and reluctantly, not with enthusiasm. For these reasons, one of my very favorite PB scenes is “Get It Over With,” with Beverly and Claire. I would very much enjoy seeing more scenes with this type of dynamic. The guilty one who “got away with it,” when friends were caught and punished for a collective misdeed, is one scenario that seems somewhat plausible.)
When the pre-spanking lecture / discussion takes place with the spankee already bared and OTK.
For non-OTK spankings:
Bending over old-fashioned student school desks.
Spankee is told to go to a certain room and “prepare.” Spanker has to bare own bottom and *wait*, in position, for spanker to arrive. Spankee hears spanker retrieving implement and approaching….
I’ll end with one that really doesn’t make sense, even by spanko standards:
Spankee bares her bottom, then *brushes hair (with fingers) out of eyes* while positioning herself OTK (as if it’s going stay in place during the spanking!). Obviously, this one only applies to /f scenarios; the rest, for me, all can apply to both /f and /m spankings.

Wow. This is getting good. I loved all of Jeff’s suggestions, and would like to add to them a little.
The pre-spanking corner time idea is good, but how about starting a video where the naughty girl has already been spanked when the guest walks in, then gets spanked AGAIN in front of the guest for trying to cover her bare bottom or flee to her room?
I also like the idea of the naughty girl being spanked in front of an aggrieved party who’s been invited over to watch — a neighbor or teacher who’s been pranked, say, or a girl who’s been bullied, accompanied by bother her parents and maybe some siblings.
How about two friends spanked together, with both sets of parents present, and maybe siblings watching too?

I would also like more discussion and pleading in videos about the baring of bottoms, with the spanker explaining that embarrassment is part of the punishment.

I had those feelings when watching “Doctors know best” in which Susan is spanking Andi Rae. It stands out as Andi’s bottom is bared as soon as she is positioned over Susan’s knee. Susan sits on a straight-backed chair and is pretty soon into a long, steady and firm spanking.

Great topic, Pixie!
For me, it’s not so much that there are particular nuances that I zoom in on, but the surprises that make me gasp and “rewind” the video a bit. For example, there was a PB video (I don’t recall the title) where the girl had injured herself and Dad held off her punishment until she was recovered. Dad got in a good smack as she was walking away from him… something totally unexpected yet adding some realism to the scene (because it deviated a little from the “typical” script). The most memorable videos for me are those that have some element that completely differentiates them from the others. I also like the videos where the misdeed is acted out instead of being mentioned in the dialog simply for the purpose of setting up the scene.
My favorite videos overall are those that are most believable; sometimes a particular element that may have been placed because it is important to the wide audience makes the scene generally implausible and I just don’t care so much for those. I am in no way criticizing other’s preferences, but such details are a distraction to me and I have a more difficult time relating to them.
Clothes are probably the least important aspect for me; don’t get me wrong… I want them to BE there.. nude spanking videos are not my thing; neither is “cute” clothing such as cheerleader outfits. While there is certainly nothing wrong with these, I am a sweats/tee-shirt girl and so the scenes that are closer to what I would actually wear are easier for me to relate to. One of my favorite “Pixie” videos is the one in which you got the belt for bad driving habits (again, I forget the name). I think that the fact that this was based on a real-life event, had great dialog, and was jeans/tee-shirt all contributed to why I liked this one so much (not to mention that the tee-shirt was for St. Patty’s day which is my birthday!).

My hot button is the costuming of the model. I just love cheerleaders/Pompom/dance team members with short pleated skirts, sweaters, vests, button-up shirts, panties, white socks, nylon hose, boots, sports bras, etc. College or Pro. My favorite college teams are University of Kentucky, Ohio State, Kilgore College (Texas) Rangerettes and USC song girls. Pro teams are San Diego Chargers, SF 49er Gold Rush, and Denver Pony Express. You get an idea of the uniforms I like from the examples given. A big part for me is the undressing of the model. One detail that I’ve seen that mostly gets left out is that the college cheerleaders wear a bloomer/spankie with the panty underneath. You’re missing an extra layer under the skirt that needs to be removed during the spanking. Also the white socks add to the shape of the leg of the cheerleader. During the 60s, 70s and early 80s most cheerleaders would wear white socks that came up to mid calf on the leg providing a wonderfully shapely view. Unfortunately today most teams have gone to ankle socks or none at all pity all around.
I also like other uniforms such as nurse, flight attendant, Can Can Dancer and military dress uniform with a none regulation short skirt and long hair pulled up under a banana style hat. If you know someone who was in JROTC in school years ago the sponsors used to dress like this. Throw back to WW2 waves and wacs. Have you done a scenario with a military theme? I’ve seen it done in some UK spanking mags (Kane, etc.) Brit army uniforms. Would love to see private Pixie get a good spanking after being captured.

My favorite implement to see is the hairbrush.
In a hand spanking, technique is important. I like to see the hand held flat, fingers together, and aiming straight at the target. No arcing motion, no thudding, and definitely no cupping or rubbing. The hand should strike and snap back. I also like to see several smacks in a row in the same place, rather than alternating back and forth between sides.
I love to see the spankee taken by the arm, led to the spot they will be punished, and placed into postion by the spanker(with or without struggle). I prefer to see the spanker bare the spankee’s bottom, since part of the thrill of spanking for me is being taken care of as a spankee, or taking care of someone else as a spanker.
One other thing I’ve noticed is that you can see female spankees of all different races and skin tones, but male tops are almost always white. So for me it is exciting to come accross a site that has a male top of another race. Variety is the spice of life!

What constitutes a “hot button” for me is pronounced femininity, that is, if I can sense from the shoot that the girl getting spanked is feeling almost compelled to be more feminine, and that she sees the struggle against this command is futile.
It’s hard to put into words, and the details may vary from girl to girl–depending I suppose on what makes her feel more vulnerable–but I know it when I see it, and the Punished Brats models supply it in abundance!

I’m a fan of the tomboyish look. Loose jeans with hiking boots or athletic shoes, t-shirt, sweatshirt or other casual top. Storyline: punished for being too adventurous and taking unnecessary risks. Basically out of concern for her well-being. Wow! It’s so awesome to hear from so many about what scene nuances make up your hot buttons. There were many things in the original post as well as your contributions that I find enticing too. I could make a very long list trying to capture everything that has a chance of pushing a scene from good to great, but I will try to limit myself to 10. I am including both what I like to see in a scene as well as what I might like in a scene I’m participating in (and by scene, I mean a role play I might engage in off camera as well as ones captured on video). What makes a good spanking great can be summarised in two words: Submission + humiliation.
The girl (spankee) must submit meekly and even co-operate in her punishment: stripping, asking to be punished, counting and thanking the spanker for each stroke, saying ‘Sir’ and curtseying, etc.
Also, the more humiliation for the girl (spankee) the better: punishment in front of sniggering public, nudity, cornertime, verbal humiliation, embarrassing clothing, etc.

What I enjoy most about spanking videos is realism, so the ones posted by real couples are my favorites. Whether they “switch off” or have a Head of Household, I love seeing the true-life interaction. There’s an incredible variety of ways that couples have worked it out, each one is unique and delightful in its own way. For me it’s a huge turn-on, seeing discipline being applied at home for actual misbehaviors and knowing that the spanking will have an effect. I love knowing the scolding and the tears are genuine. My next favorite thing is videos of disciplinarians dealing with “clients” – again, real situations and real discipline. But of course I enjoy the websites with models and play scenarios, and PB is great.
Here’s a “cold button” for me (a total turnoff) – a model who has to keep throwing her long hair out of the way. It ruins the scene for me! It keeps reminding me that she’s doing it totally for the camera. For heaven’s sake, give those models some scrunchies! The technology is available!
