All Paddles Great and Small

July 22nd, 2009

I’m sometimes asked what my least favorite implement is.  My answer changes from time to time, but currently it stands as the big fraternity paddle.  That thing not only hurts on many levels, but it’s downright scary.

The heavy, solid wood simultaneously stings the skin and can send blinding pain deeper into the tissue if delivered with a bit of force.  My muscles will ache for a few days after a good paddling as if I had done a crazy number of hours on the stairmaster.

But it’s not just the pain that scares me about big paddles, it’s the chance of getting truly injured.  I fear the paddle hitting me too high and cracking my tailbone.  Or the paddle’s edge colliding with my flesh instead of hitting me square with the paddle’s flat front.  Or the paddle landing off center and hitting my thighs or hip which is occasionally hard to avoid since the paddles can be much larger than the cheeks they are meant to strike.

Gulp!!

I don’t trust a big paddle in the hands of just anyone.  And even when one is entrusted to a capable, experienced, sharp sighted individual, I find myself worrying the whole time about a misplaced swat.  I’m afraid to move or react even when that sort of physical feedback is encouraged because I am dreadfully afraid that I’ll be crouching down just as the spanker is swinging through with a swat and that could be very bad.

So that’s what leads to my dislike of big paddles.  Smaller paddles are no walk in the park either, but I find them less scary.  OTK paddles can vary in weight and stinginess and I’ll love-hate them on an individual basis.

I think smaller paddles can be quite deceiving though.  One might assume by first glance that a smaller implement will hurt less than a large one, but I don’t personally find that to be true.  Yes, I’ve just gone on about how scary the big bad frat paddle is, but that is mostly out of safety concerns.  Narrower stick paddles like this one …

Poor Beverly!

and heavy yet compact implements like this one …

Courtesy of Spanking Paddles by Walt.

can be especially hard to tolerate because of the concentrated impact.  It’s like having a hardcover dictionary dropped on your hand or smacking your hand with a hammer.  Yes, the dictionary will hurt but you certainly don’t want to underestimate that hammer simply because it’s smaller!

Sometimes I think smaller implements don’t appear as impressive on video as larger ones.  The big paddles look scary (and perhaps rightfully so for the reasons I mentioned earlier), but I know how painful an implement with a smaller surface area can really be.  A wooden spoon or a hairbrush with a slightly rounded face can be excruciating and yet not look like it’s much at all … except perhaps to those that have felt them firsthand —errr firstbottom?  And if given the choice between a larger, flat board style school paddle and the smaller impact area at the end of a long handle design with a wooden bathbrush?  I might very well try to work through my frat paddle fears and dodge the bathrbrush!

What are your paddle preferences?  What have your experiences been in either delivering, receiving, or watching paddling scenes?

Wow Pixie yes paddles have to be used carefully on botties of girls at p.b.they seem to be lol.you look lovely as usual in the current vid with George an english chap ,it is an early p.b. one isnt it well love and big spanks from tim xxxx

  2. Pixie

Yes, we do strive to always use the paddles safely at PB. In fact, I plan to face my fears a bit and take some heavy swats with the paddle on Saturday from Principal Veronica.

Glad you are enjoying my most recent update, Favorite Author with George. It is an older scene, but as I was going through the available content for updates, I stumbled across this one and though it was pretty good. I realize I’ve put up some of my early films recently, but that’s because I’ve wanted to try to vary the featured spankers a bit and it’s always great to see Clare Fonda and George who are no longer able to join us for shoots.

  3. Lee

I prefer a fairly wide, but thin paddle, one that leaves one totally red, but no bruses of cuts.

That feels like at first like a big sunburn and then later, even day later, like a large warm hand is pressed against the butt.

Better a smack than a thud.

Being old fashioned, it is best OTK.

Too often, I see what is called a spanking is really a beating.

That is what I like about Punished Brats.

You and the girls are spanked, and sometimes I think you could light a room from the glow generated by those red bottoms.

I admit to a fascination with the bath brush. Although I have never been spanked it looks domestic, like the wooden spoon, available in most households. I shall heed your words of warning about it however.

  5. Sam

I agree that folks must be careful on both sides of a paddle. Being obsessed with paddles since grade school many years ago, and preferring to be on the receiving end, I prefer thinner, smackier, stingier paddles that can be somewhat safer than the larger, thicker, thud type paddles. I also prefer wide paddles versus thinner ones to maximize the impact and sting area. Same applies when I am giving or watching.

  6. Marcus

I love to use the rice paddle, great for cooking rice and behinds. It delivers that small, thin, high stingy swat in such a concentrated area that it leads to a squeal, usually within one or two swats. If I want tears, I can go for MARKSmanship (yes, pun intended) and hit one spot on each cheek.

But I just like to make those swats work.

I’ve used the heavier paddles, but I’m really not much for the thud paddles.

  7. Little Princess dani

This is one of those where I want to comment..but I just want it to be between us. I love having you as my friend..:)

    Thanks for your wonderful blog!

  8. Erica

Those heavy frat paddles are a hard limit for me. There is simply too much potential for injury and damage, as you mentioned. And I can’t get into a scene if I’m terrified of a misfired shot that will cause nerve damage, shatter a tailbone, etc.

I agree that smaller implements can feel a whole lot worse than they look. I am not well-versed in which types of wood hurt the most, but I know they can vary greatly. I prefer a leather paddle, myself. As long as it’s NOT the type that has the metal stiffening bar running through it. I’m all about smack and sting, vs. thud. Thud hurts down to the bone.

  9. AK

    Hi Pixie
If I was to get spanked by a paddle I would have no fear as long
as it was an experienced spanker like Veronica.I like to watch a
spanking with a paddle as long as it is a spanking not a beating.
    Take Care
    Love AK

I’ve always had a fascination with lexan. A good lexan paddle stings like a mf, but doesn’t seem to bruise (me at least). They are typically thin so there is no deep tissue issue, and the sting is undeniably attention grabbing.

  11. Kim

    Pixie,

Your comments underscore why it is best to have enough time between swats for the spankee to get back into position and stop squirming and reacting.

A well-known couple on SpankingTube posts videos that show how NOT to wield the big frat paddle, unfortunately dismissing the warnings of several posters about the potential for damage. Hopefully they will read your comments, as you are very respected in the industry. An injury like that could be life-changing.

  12. Linde

    Pixie,

My most feared implement is a cane. But, then again I don’t consider a caning a spanking but some do. I was talked into trying one once and luckily it was only tried out with a somewhat moderate force and I was able to stop it after only a couple of hits.

Bath brushes, hairbrushes, wooden spoons, oven shovels and cutting boards with handles all can be desirable or terrifying depending on the size and weight. A “traditional” wooden hair-brush can bring me to tears not only because of the pain but also the emotional memories and connection. A tawse or other leather implement with thin straps can be desirable in the love/hate relationship, but can also cause fear if used near the “sit-spot” and I am across a couple of pillows with my legs slightly apart.

A spanking by ANYONE inexperienced or unknown can be frightful because of the unknow and the vulnerability when in position.

I’ll have to tell you sometime about a surprise I got when told I was going to be spanked with a ice cream spoon by a VERY skillful, experienced spanker.

    Linde

  13. jan

Unfortunately, I’m usually ‘up the creek…’

  14. Schwarz

I never spanked with a paddle, we just used the flat pieces from the roof of Lincoln logs back when me and that girl played around with spanking. Though as young as we were it may have seemed paddle size to us.

But you know I have been wondering for a while and I would love to build and try this, but I want to know if you think this is a good idea, Pixie. Take a traditional paddle, but attach a nice smooth sheet of velvet or other thicker textured cloth on the side that is used to make contact with the skin in spanking. Would that enhance the way it feels any? My hypothesis is that it would be more suited for a sensual spanking. If that was so then you could have one side for when the woman is being a “Good girl” and one side, the bare wood side, for when she is a “Bad girl.” To top it off, call it the “Naughty and Nice” Paddle. So tell me, please, am I on to something here?

  15. the Serial Spanker

No, I think large wooden paddles, along with thick brutal canes, fall under the category of medieval torture devices, and have nothing to do with spanking. Whipping, yes…spanking, no.
On Saturday nites, however, she is waiting for her weekly punishment spanking, which she has taken the pleasure to earn day by day, incident by incident, insuring that her trip to the shed will be a memorable one…for both of us. And in that case it’s very possible that a paddle or cane might be used…followed by lots of tender loving care.

  16. Isolde

I agree with Erica, -thuds are duds. I see I’m not alone in my lack of enthusiasm for the mighty paddle. Phew; I worried that this was spanko heresy.

Also, paddles are hopelessly plebian and I’m kind of an elitist. I need a backstory to emotionally engage. Crops appeal to my animal-loving anglophile side and silver brushes are romantic. My favourite strap/belt is burgundy calfskin bought at a rummage sale at the fanciest church in Gramercy Park for $3!! (I’m elitist, -not rich. LOL) I’ll only buy leather/suede used because I’m opposed in principle.
The lady in charge of the sale said,”That’s beautiful! Enjoy your belt.” I nodded,”Oh, I will!” LOL

The only wooden implements I’ll sit still for (inept metaphor alert!) are bathbrushes and spoons, because I enjoy bathing and cooking. Frat paddles have no positive associations whatsoever, just drunken over-entitled idiots and serious pain with no purpose. Plus, when I was a student I had a flat in a subdivided Victorian with a big Classic revival fraternity house right next door. *Shudders* I spent every Sunday morning picking up the heineken empties they tossed over the fence. College life should ideally denote exclusivity and privilege, but people like that devalue the whole setting.

  17. 2Good

Reminds me of the show “Principal’s Office”. In one episode, a girl chooses the paddle over detention… they don’t show it (you see the closed door), but you def hear it.

My guess is Veronica won’t give you the option of detention on Saturday.

  18. Annapurna

My own personal preference is the bath brush, but other paddles might be of interest.

The question of using a paddle is one that is best answered by trust, respect of boundaries, and technique.

If trust is not well earned, any spanking would be out of the question.

Boundaries are about topping from the bottom: anything else lacks consent and crosses the line of possible illegality.

Technique is how a paddle is used, preferable with good aim, firm wrist, and judicious delivery. Spankings are not beatings, nor are they torture meted out under the guise of well-deserved punishment. It’s conceivable that many swats could be delivered with a paddle that never quite cross the threshold of intolerable pain, leaving the spankee asking for more.

Or, as they say in golf, the swing is the thing! ;)

  19. Lee

    It depends on the paddle.

A small thin one can give the smack, instead of the thud of a thick board, just over a wider area, often getting both cheecks at the same time.

A lot like a big hairbrush or hand (though a hand used improperly can give a thud right down to the bone.

Properly applied, a thin paddle can leabe the whole bottom cherry red without a single bruise, and very hot and stinging for a long time.

There are three parts to a good sound spanking.

    1. The anticipation (waiting and then going over the lap with a bare bottom).

    2. The spanking. (usually less that five minutes, but seems to last forever) (at a smack every second 5 minutes can easily be more than 300).

    3. the hot tingling feeling after that can last for hours and sometimes linger for days.

    Lee

  20. TigerLily

Whether the paddle is large or small, the thickness is what’s important to me. If its too thin, it doesn’t sting at all. If its too thick, it will deliver a thud, rather than that wonderful surface sting that I love. Some items look interesting, like a wooden bread board or those old paddle-ball games with the rubber ball attached to the paddle, but they just don’t work in real life. If no-one is around and I see something that looks like a good toy, I can’t resist smacking myself with it just to see if it works. If it delivers that hot sting that almost makes me jump, its perfect! Anything else, forget about it. I think the length of the spanking would decide the size of the paddle used. If a really long session is desired, then using a small paddle, spoon or hairbrush would be good, so it would take time to redden the whole bottom, inch by inch. For a shorter spanking, a larger paddle would work better, since it covers both cheecks at the same time and would make quick work of turning the whole bottom red. I also think the postion of the spanker/spankee makes a difference in what implement would be used. Large paddles are easier to control if both people are standing, while a small implement works great for an over the lap spanking. No matter what the implement used, the most important thing is that the spanker takes care to use it right, and to never risk injuring the person on the bottom who has given them their complete trust.

  21. Annapurna

    TigerLily,

What a nice post. I think you summed up the topic perfectly and your words seem to fit with my perspective on the subject to a “T”!

  22. Dean Osborne

The paddle is my favorite implement. There is nothing quite like the sting imparted by a well-swung medium weight wooden paddle, and the sound it produces upon impact is awesome.
Heavy frat type paddles are too damaging and dangerous and should be avoided. The very thin paddles can hardly be felt at all and easily break. A medium weight hardwood paddle about 3/8″ thick is ideal for administering a stinging paddling without the worry of being too severe. a long handled paddle will impart a greater sting due to the increased leverage, and paddles with small holes will likewise sting more due to the decreased air resistance.

  23. Laurent

    Very interesting,

    and very unknow, in France.
    Well written as usual.

  24. Dr. Ken

I’m not a big “paddle person”–I have some, just don’t use them often, if at all. My preference is to spank by hand. I do have a leather paddle that gets some occasional and rare usage, and there’s an effective hairbrush that usually gets used on one particular person, but that’s about it.
Of course, if you and I ever meet, Pixie…who knows? LOL

    Dr. Ken

  25. Phil

Very worried about the larger frat paddles given our commens on potential for injury.

I would go with the smaller implements: bathbrush, wooden spoon, hairbrush. They sting like anything and make sure you know you are there to be taught a lesson on your naughty botty and not injured or risking injury.

I did spank myself with a bathbrush once and it hurt like hell! Mind you I did do one swat on my thigh and I bruised yself, so be careful even with the bathbrush!

I would be terriied and now I must behave if someone wielded a wooden spoon or bathbush at me. I woul be good for the rest of the day; or until I got into brat mode :)

  26. Winchester

I have never tried the padle in any shape or form, but I do know that a very pliable leather mocassin slipper with loose laces stings very nastily indeed – I think it is the laces – so I wonder whether a martinet might be something to continue to avioid?

  27. Kevin

I love the paddle. It is my favorite both using and recieving. I have a fiberglass paddle, I like it because it stings like you would not believe but it does not leave lasting marks. I have found when you make someone bend over and grab her ankles it helps to make sure you hit the right mark. I love your blog, would like to see pictures of you grabing your ankles.

    Kevin

  28. pixie

Lee – I prefer thud over sting, but smack is good too. I imagine that is somewhere in between. I’m glad you enjoy the site!!

KaraJ – Yes, the bath brush is a very traditional domestic implement. I’ll fully encourage your fascination and send you mine. >:)

Sam – I’d agree that the somewhat thinner paddles can be safer, though of course proper use and technique is always necessary.

Marcus – The rice paddle looks like an oversized wooden spoon! Ouch! This nice sided design looks like it would be perfect for a spanking. http://www.wallysworldofwood.net/images/Rice_Paddles.JPG

Dani – Sure, I understand. Thanks for commenting. 

Erica – I much prefer leather as well. Some really thick strops can scare me as much as frat paddles because they are so heavy that their impact is similar to a paddle.

AK – Yes, Veronica is one of the people I trust with just about any implement.

Mitch – I haven’t felt lexan that much to know for certain about the bruising, but I sure agree with you about the sting!!

Kim – I’m a big believer in safety first, no matter what. Whether it’s fun, erotic, severe, a scene, or real discipline, it has to be safe!

Linde – Oh those accidental shots to the bits and pieces can be awful!! I’m very intrigued with your tale of the ice cream spoon. Write me.

Jan – Well at least you have a paddle then. :)

Schwarz – I’ve seen leather paddles that have the soft side, but I’m not sure I’ve seen a wooden one. It might be nice as it can be used to tease the senses and would take out a lot of the sting if a swat were delivered with the cloth covered side. Might be fun to never be quite sure of what was coming next.

Serial Spanker – Certainly sounds like that naughty miss may have earned her punishment after a week of daily misdeeds.

Isolde – How neat that you make such associations with implements! I like how you think.

2Good – Nope, there’s no getting out of it with Veronica. Lilyanna also did a school paddling scene that was even more similar to Principal’s Office than my own. We were not inspired by the show though, but by two real life incidents from naughty Miss Lilyanna’s past!

Annapurna – All very key points in ensuring that the spanking experience is both safe and positive for both spanker and spankee.

Dean Osborne – You certainly sound like you are very knowledgeable about paddles! I think those ones with holes also hurt a bit more because of the additional edges that come in contact with the flesh. Makes for some pretty polka dot marks though.

Laurent – Thank you. :) I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Dr. Ken – Eeep! I’m hoping the good doctor will decide that a hand spanking and perhaps some leather will be in order … unless my bratitis becomes a serious issue.

Phil – A bathbrush swat on the thigh! I’m not surprised that it bruised. That is a mean implement and certainly one to be careful with too.

Winchester – I haven’t felt a martinet either, but I have no doubt that it’s whippy and stingy like the laces. I’d trim those laces and stick with the slipper. :D

Kevin – Funny thing. I just did that school paddling scene on SAturday and started out grasping my ankles, but was actually asked to reposition to have my hands on my knees. I was told that by bending all the way over, I was making the target area too small. I compromised and kept my hands just below my knees.

  29. Poppa Mark

Let me chime in here; as a spanker and a paddle maker I’ve had to evolve my ideas on paddle making as I learned my craft. My first efforts were made from Pine and large; too large to be handled effectively, “Like a frat paddle”!
From there I tried to come up with a workable size and let me tell you finding some one to patiently bend over while I tried to come up with a pattern was not easy.
With some help from “Nikki” on the now defunct “Blistered Butts” site and her Hubby we hit on the paddle size using a coffee can lid.
From there my paddles got progressively smaller and lighter with a few exceptions.
I made a few Poplar wood paddles for Firmhand but found them to be too large for my tastes.
Eventually I found a paddle shaped like a Milk bottle and made from fairly light wood to be easy to handle and have a very stingy after effect. These were used on the AEG site and the daniels TSC site before it closed. Pixie has a version of one I made in pine by her request.
I also make a light, thin 15″ long X 2″ wide, “Spanking Stick”.
I was surprised to find the models had a love / hate relationship with them and from my personal experience if you want to make a girl squirm and squeel these will do it.
The type of wood you use make as big a difference as the paddle itself. Hard wood, (Maple, Oak) tend to bruise much more quickly than a softer wood, “Poplar, Pine, Black Walnut) Regardless of the size of the paddle.
Finally as a spanker I know the final control is in the hand of the one wielding the paddle. I quickly found a tight grip and firm / hard SWAT will hurt in unintended ways.
What works best for me is a light but controlled grip and allowing the paddle to “Bounce” at the end of the stroke. After all your not driving a nail with a hammer, your spanking a bottom with a real person on the other end gving you the gift of submission.
So there is my two cents!

  30. Erica

Pixie, you are absolutely right about some of the larger and heavier leather strops. I once had one of those used on me and I swear to God it felt like being hit with a side of beef.

  31. Dr. Ken

Pixie–I think that sounds like an excellent prescription…. :-)
