I think it is definitely something you are born with in most cases, however I know others who say they were introduced to it later in life by a boyfriend or girlfriend. But I think the really true spankos are those who were born with the interest. I know I was born with it. All through my life and starting in early childhood, I was fascinated with everything spanking; the comic book, the story passages, incidents on TV, hearing about spankings, witnessing spankings, seeing paddles, straps, etc all held a fascination and excitement for me, and still do to this day.

I was born at the end of the 70s and grew up watching wimpy shows like Full House; can you imagine sweet Danny Tanner taking a strap to one of his girls? (It occurs to me that a great spanking surname was completely wasted on him!)

Sorry I’m late with my reply but wanted to add my 2 cents. I’m with the “born with it people”. I really can’t remember a specific incident where I caught the bug. I didn’t like, enjoy or intentionally do things to cause spanking growing up. I did however become fascinated with the movie “McClintock”, “Blue Hawaii”, “Donovan’s Reef” and several others. I also loved looking at Dot, Little Audry and Richie Rich comics in the hopes of finding them in a predicament that resulted in an OTK panel. I also was able to find a Sept 1975 cover of National Lampoon which I treasure to this day.

But, along in my teen years, after my Mom decided I was too old for my father to spank me himself, something clicked ….. something seemed to have been taken from me that I longed for and missed. Mom took over and continued to give spankings but I rebeled and started doing things I wasn’t supposed to. The worse thing of all is I didn’t like myself and I was frustrated with life. I’m lucky to have made it through that time but I know that whatever someone feels inside … that they have to like who they are and feel good about themselves and what their likes and dislikes are.

Richard – I am with you about always having the fascination but being turned off by my own experiences. While I certainly have a love for spanking today, I do everything in my power to avoid participating in or viewing any scenes which are too close to my own unpleasant memories.

Paul – I don’t know that we’ll ever figure out the exact origins and I suppose there is no reason to fuss over it. As long as you can enjoy it for what it is, that’s all that really matters. And no matter why the pajamas are an important element for you, I’m glad they are.

Hermione – I suppose we have to be exposed to something in order to realize our interest. I wonder how many other things there are in life that I might have a passion for but just have discovered them yet. I hope there are many things for all of us that we can find over time.

CurtisG – Very interesting that the ladies you knew grew to enjoy spanking with time. They may not have been wired to be a spanko, but their bottoms were (as you mentioned) and perhaps they simply enjoyed making you happy as well.

funbun – There must be some sort of predisposition for the majority of spankos or else everyone in your village would have shared the same passion as you do given the similar exposure. While I think people can learn to enjoy something that isn’t a lifelong passion, there is just somehting that clicks for most of us early on.

mitch – And wasn’t it a big relief to realize that it’s OK and that you are far from alone? I wonder how many other students you went to school with might have frequented the same sections of the library.

Todd – I can’t pinpoint a single incident either which gives me the feeling that it’s always been a interest that was there from the very start. I have many early childhood memories which exhibit the interest having already been formed, but none that stick out as the very first one that got me started.

That is a fascinating tale about your friend. I suppose that some people wouldn’t have even remembered the incident or brushed it off or perhaps even had the excitement of getting away with the misdeed lead to future episodes of shoplifting. I hope the experience has led to many positive things in her adult spanking life … including, perhaps, a spanking from you?!

Annapurna – Very interesting theories about the development of fetishes. Perhaps that are discovered later in life were cultivated ever so slightly earlier on but just needed a second, larger trigger to reignate the fascination. I do think we have the ability to change who we are over time though. We continue to evolve through the years as our situations and exeriences shape who we are and how we react. Someone who may have at one time been a tried and true submissive may grow to strongly dislike the role and desire to become a dominant (I’m thinking of at least one friend in particular who followed this path).

Depending on how you acted in trying to get yourself in trouble, perhaps they were concerned about rewarding the bad behavior. But I also think as children we often believe (and in some cases fear) that adults have a magical ability to read our thoughts.

dana – I’d agree with you that pointing solely to a gene is far too simple. There are many elements that shape who we are throughout life. What I find interesting though, is that while many of us can share early childhood memories of looking up the definition of the word spank in the dictionary or being thrilled over a reference on TV, we have very different backgrounds – grew up in different places, may have been spanked or not, may have witnessed a real spanking or not, may have tried to elicite spanking accounts from friends or many have shied away from the topic, and yet at some point, something just clicked. I don’t know that we can ever truly determine how or why we develop the interest that we have when others who were exposed to very similar experiences couldn’t care less about spanking. It’s just something to ponder for but a moment … and then go back to enjoying the interest for what it is.

The forgiveness after a spanking is very important to me although sometimes when watching a scene, I prefer the spanker to still be strict in leaving the spankee to sort out her emotions on her own rather than transitioning too quickly from tough disciplinarian to huggy consoler.

AK – I think you’d still qualify as a spanko even if you are only interested in being a spectator. I think that would describe a fair number of people in our community.
