Oddly, it's easier to look directly into the lens when there is no one standing behind it. I get intimidated sometimes feeling like I'm making googly eyes at the photographer. When you look directly toward the camera, you seem to instead be looking into the viewer, making a form of uncanny eye contact. I noticed Susannah Hoffs, lead singer of the Bangles, had that ability as well. It might simply be due to making the focal point somewhere behind the lens vs. others simply looking at the lens itself. I agree with Tony Elka.
