I’ve been baking up a storm lately. In the past week I’ve made gingerbread cookies, frosted sugar cookies, stained glass cookies …
and my favorites, spitzkuchen (a chocolate spice cake topped with a jam glaze and dipped in chocolate). Mmmmm. Objects in this photo are even yummier than they appear.
I had a little fun while making the cut out cookies. My set of new cookie cutters (60 in all!) included a hand shape and you know where my mind went.
A couple of joined circles and a little red icing and ta da! A well spanked cookie bottom.
I even tried making a punished stained glass cookie, but that looked a little severe! Ouch. That poor cookie definitely didn’t make the nice list this year.
Probably should eat up my naughty cookies before I have to try to pass them off as sunburned snowmen to an unsuspecting vanilla visitor.

I love it! The spanky cookies are too cute to munch on. You could always call the stained-glass punished ones “the Rigid East cookies.”
You know, I used to bake holiday cookies way back when. Did the whole bit with the dough and the rolling and the cutting and the baking and the decorating… until one day, it occurred to me: “Wait… why bother?” :-Þ Kidding… your efforts are much appreciated (and very yummy, I’m certain of that!).

Those cookies would look good hanging on the Christmas tree! If anyone asked about the bottom-moons you could just say they were unusual baubles.
Home baking is the best. I’m envious of the folks in Cow-Town who have you as their neighbour. My baking skills are limited to average plain scones, average cheese scones and – on one occasion only – producing a square, flat, chewy chocolate thing.

One vaguely cookie related question. Watching one of your fine movies the other night I was struck (though not as many times as you) by the difference in hand spanking styles and I am curious as to whether you have a preference. One method is the typical spanking when the hand is withdrawn immediately after contact and the other is when the hand maintains contact for a few seconds. Any preference?

Hmmm, me thinks little Pixie might want to hide the spitzkuchen on Christmas Eve. If Santa spots that lying around then the reindeer are going to be towing a lump afterwards.
As for me personally, I think the guys at Nathan’s hot dog eating contest would have a hard time keeping up with me if I got my grubby little hands on your spitzkuchen.

It just occured to me that making cookies like this would be a great way to maybe check out a new vanilla boyfriend (or girlfriend). You could always say you got them as a gift or picked them up at a new bakery and then watch to see if they show interest. Maybe leave the “hands” and the “bottoms” on separate plates and watch to see if they try to put them together!!!

007 – Yep, that’s the problem with cute food shapes. I always feel like I need to apologize before biting into a gingerbread man or chomping the ears off a chocolate bunny.
Tony – “Sometimes me think what is love, and then me think love is what last cookie is for. Me give up the last cookie for you.” Who knew Cookie Monster was such a hopeless romantic?
Erica – Yes! Rigid East is spot on. These cookies have earned their stripes.
Making the cookies was fun, cleaning up afterwards was considerably less fun, and now I’m trying to figure out what to do with the dozens upon dozens of cookies we have.
Mark – There seems to be a recurring theme, eh?
Ed – Yes, there are a lot of different shapes – from dinosaurs to flowers to the more traditional Christmas shapes, I have cutters for every occasion.
hairbrushman – Ooh! Brush cookies. Now that is one cutter that I’m missing, but I’m sure I could make it happen anyway.

D – I prefer the standard spanking where the hand collides with the bottom and then immediately comes up again in preparation for the next swat. I rather not have the hand continue to stay in contact as if trying to squish my cheek flat.

Pixie, the cookies look great. I’m about to bake some cookies myself and was thinking about trying the stained glass cookies (found a recipe in Rachael Ray or BH&G or one of those mags). How do they come out? Are they tricky? does the candy melt fairly thin?

Unfortunately I don’t have a Christmas Pudding recipe, and even if I did, I’d probably make a right hash of baking it.
However, I do get a home-made pud sent to me every year.
