Celtic Fest

September 28th, 2008

Yesterday, despite the rather dreary weather, I attended a Celtic festival with my boyfriend.

Have to love a place where people of every size, shape, age, and gender are decked out in plaid!

Of course I had to take the opportunity to don my tartan kilt and let my Irish curls flow - well, given the humidity, there was no chance of denying my curls even if I’d wanted to.

I suppose my skirt was more along the lines of a mini-kilt, but it had the standard flat front and pleats in the back (though they don’t seem to show well in the photo).  I blended right in with the others at the festival, but I got a few side-glances when we stopped at Applebee’s for dinner afterwards.  I suddenly wished I’d brought along a pair of jeans.

Just in case we go again next year, or I have another occasion that calls for tartan, I ordered a slightly more regulation kilt in blackwatch plaid (my favorite) from one of the vendors.  Wouldn’t want to face the consequences of a length violation, would I?  :)

I’m a plaid fan too. We have a Celtic festival here and you’ve inspired me to go. That skirt is very cute on you, you shouldn’t change it.

    Pixie,

The one with you facing away from the camera is now my new computer wallpaper!

In school I studied the Greeks, Romans, etc. and love cultural events like that!

  4. Duncan

  5. Dave

    Pixie,

Gray skies, intermittent rain, jacket-temps: looks like a fine, soft day in Donegal. I love those old, granite structures, like the ones you’re posing amidst. They have the look and feel of centuries about them that can make even an old person feel like a mere child in their presence. Touch them, and you can almost be one with all the people who’ve stood in that place and done the same over all the years past.

Which of course goes along with time-honored tradition: “So, lass, you think you’re too old for a good spankin’, DEW YE? You’ve no idea what ‘old’ is. When I’m done with yew, you can stand in the ‘weeping corner’ where naughty little lassies have stood, knickers down, rubbin’ and cryin’, fer hundreds of years!”

Nice photos, shame about the weather. Did you order a Lochgelly Tawse to go along with your new kilt?

Why would an innocent pleated skirt like that turn any heads?
Are you sure it wasn’t the sexy boots?

  10. Jai

Celtic festivals take me back to my Scottish roots. Love the kilt, so cute. Now I want one haha. I understand about humidity and curls too, lol. At least your hair looks tamed, mine goes crazy! :)

  11. Devlin O'Neill

The Black Watch tartan is very similar to the Gunn tartan. I’m Gunn clan on my mother’s side, Frazier clan on my father’s. The Fraziers have 3 registered tartans. Overachievers that lot, I reckon. *G*

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for linking to Devlin O’Neill’s Weblog, and to let you know I returned the favor. Also grabbed that watering the roses pic to illustrate the announcement, just because it’s so cute and demure and still NAUGHTY.

And not for nothing, but I love your work. :-)

    Pixie–
Curious soul that I am, I have to ask, especially since the males are asked this all the time: What did you wear under the kilt? Did you go traditional, or….?
    :-)

    Dr. Ken

  13. Devlin O'Neill

I see your point, Doc, but a woman NEVER can wear a kilt. Sorry, but it’s a fairly concrete rule. Even if it’s sewn of clan tartan, a woman wears a SKIRT, and only a man wears a kilt. What he wears beneath, or doesn’t, is known only to God and his wife, d’ye ken?

Great photo, Pixie, plaid suits you. You’ll have to show us a picture in your new kilt. Sounds like you and your bf had a great time. Good for you both. :)

Hope you had a nice time…. The boots are really cute…

Temporary quick offtopic note for ‘tim’: please contact Chelsea at chelseapfeiffer@aol.com for assistance.

Once I’ve had a brief rest, I’ll be back tomorrow to post responses and an update on my spanking for charity. :)

That photo shows you looking stunning as always. I
Wish I had half your fashion sense {plaid envy}. Will you be my stylist?

    LOL :-)

I supposed you get sideways glances everywhere you go, kilt, boots, or jeans. I would have to do my best not to stare. My little voice would be saying “Oh, behave!”

  21. tim

pixie many thanks for your reply the trouble is i cannot use e mail at the moment love from tim.

  22. Winchester

I don’t know about what the Irish wear with or under kilts but the Black Watch certainly were traditional Scots! (It was rumoured in my youth that when going out on parade they all had to stand over a mirror on the floor!) So beware when your wear their tartan!

“Highland store” online shop do a good range of women’s mini-kilts as well as long ones - thhough they do call them “kilts (skirts)”. Perhpas the purists will argue that only males wear kilts - but who cares what you call hem: it’s how you look in them that matters - and you look stunning!

Carly - I hope you are able to make it to your local Celtic fest and wear your best plaid too. :)

tim - Happy belated birthday. Yes, I’m a Libra as well, but my birthday isn’t for a few more weeks. Sierra is now posting on her livejournal since Blogger deleted her other blog.

dani - really? I’m so flattered that you have saved the photo on your computer and even used it as wallpaper.

Duncan - We did get to see some of the Highland games including the weight throw and the sheaf toss as well as the opening ceremony with all the wonderful pipe bands. This is the biggest Celtic event that I know of in the area that includes the games. Good fun!

Dave - Thank you! I imagined Sean’s voice on your behalf as I read that.

007 - Lots of fun rain or shine, though I’m glad we weren’t caught in any major downpours like they had on Sunday.

^Mike - It’s nice that they hold the Celtic Classic in a historic district which adds even more charm to the event. I enjoy checking out the old structures and seeing the demonstrations of oldtime crafts such as the one at the blacksmith’s shop as much as visiting the fair’s vendors.

Prefectdt - Despite there being many vendors including leatherworkers, there wasn’t a single one that I could find that offered a tawse for sale. We need to work on that. :)

Steve (UK) - I’m not sure which is was, but I noticed even our waitress looking so I made a point of displaying my Celtic fest pin in an attempt to silently explain my outfit.

Jai - There are many, many websites that offer all sorts of different tartan items for sale including skirts and kilts. Some even sell “American kilts”, but they generally aren’t plaid and not as much fun to me.

Devlin - I haven’t found that my family has a clan tartan, but based on county it is Roscommon. I haven’t found it available in a skirt though.

I’m happy to link to your blog. I’m only sorry that I hadn’t sooner. And thank you for posting a link back to mine along with your kind words!

Dr. Ken - For the sake of color coordination I wore red panties that had just a touch of black lace.

Michael - Thank you! I’m glad plaid suits me as I love it. My closet is a virtual plaid explosion.

Justme - It was a lot of fun. I look forward to going again next year if possible.

2Good - *blushes* I’m not sure that I know too much about fashion in general, but I do know my plaids. I’d be more than happy to help get you decked out in some plaid skirts (makes mental note …)

    Dave - it’s true!

Redchief - You are very sweet. I hope if you ever really did see me that you’d be most likely to come up and say hello. :D

tim - I hope you have been able to chat with Chelsea and get things sorted out.

Winchester - From what I understand, Black Watch is a “free tartan” and permissable for wear by anyone, but I’d certainly adhere to a quick inspection if the rules called for it. I promise to behave (mostly) while wearing their tartan … especially if I’m likely to go to Applebee’s afterwards.

Chelsea - Thank you for reaching out to tim. I’m glad my blog could be of help. :)

Helping Tim (whom I also like) is just another example of the kind treatment that Pixie and Chelsea give.

    Thanx!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Redchief

tim, Seirra has gone back to her live journal blog and is posting there.

  27. PaulH

I love the kilt and consider it a perfect choice for a Celtic festival. Indeed if you had worn jeans to the event then you would deserve to be soundly spanked for it!

  28. AJ

    Pixie …
By any chance did you attend the Bethlehem, Pa., CelticFest in September? The backgrounds certainly looked familiar.
