I recently received an email stating that while OTK is nice, most real spankings are done with the spankee standing up. This surprised me a little as personally, when I envision a spanking I tend to think of the naughty bottom being over the knee. Beyond even what is shown on spanking websites, OTK tends to be what I see most often used in real life spanking play, real discipline, and in mainstream media, but that could very well just be my experience.
I’m all for a little variety – bent over the desk, lying flat on the bed, or even hands up on the wall in arrest position, but OTK is the classic position to me. It presents the target area nicely while allowing the spankee to kick and react (as we tend to do when our bottoms are being set ablaze) without being able to get away easily. A stand up spanking works if it’s a quick warning swat or the spankee is very compliant in standing still, but if there is a struggle this could lead to an impromptu do-se-do when the spanker and spankee are both average sized adults. Actually, that do-se-do can be part of the fun but a misplaced swat due to the struggle isn’t nearly as enjoyable.
Certain implements generally require a spankee be in a position other than OTK. The cane, school paddle, and the strap are a few that come to mind. But I tend to put these sorts of punishments into their own categories. If you tell me I’m getting a spanking and then pull out the cane? Zoinks! Not at all what I’d be expecting. Of course as with the do-se-do, that element of surprise can be all part of the fun. (Note: I think this is a personal record for repeat usage of a square dancing term in a totally non-square dance related post.)
So in your experience, is OTK as classic and commonly used as I have found or are spankings with the recipient standing up actually the norm?

I have to say that in all my years involved in spanking (on both sides)that OTK has always been the position of choice for all the reasons you stated plus because of the level of intimacy and because it gives you the best way to stay connected with the spankee and gage what is going on.
But I do have to say another fun position is just bending a Lady under the arm and lifting her until her feet are just barely touching the ground.

Most real spankings are given standing up? Since when? Who the heck determines what’s “real,” anyway?
I really don’t know what the norm is, but it seems to me that OTK is still and always has been the most classic position for spanking. It’s certainly esthetically appealing and the most intimate.
I don’t like being spanked standing up. It’s awkward and uncomfortable, and my legs get very shaky and feel like they’re going to buckle. If I can lean into something or brace my hands/arms, then it’s marginally better. But my favorite non-OTK position is lying atop a bed, an ottoman or something like that, with pillows piled under my belly. That position is perfect for a strapping — makes the bottom stick up nicely, but it’s comfortable.

Standing up? Humbug! That’s a swat … maybe even a series of swats … but not a spanking.
I won’t go as far as to say OTK all the way (although that has a nice ring to it), but I will say OTK most of the time (not nearly as catchy). For variety, I also like the bent-over-an-object approach. I’m particularly fond of the type of the scenario where the spankee has to prepare by going alone to the Designated Spanking Area, baring bum and bending (over chair, sofa, table, desk, ottoman, whatever), and WAITING that way, for an indeterminate amount of time, for the spanker to arrive and take care of business.

Not in this house! Or in most of the other spanko households that I’m aware of.
I much prefer OTK or some variation thereof. Most common is actually me sitting on the side of the bed with Sparkle over one leg (basically between my legs) so that her upper body is on the bed and her legs on the floor. I tend to reserve “true” OTK with a straight-backed chair for serious punishments as it’s not particularly comfortable for the bottom.
OTL on the couch is another favorite. We both enjoy watching TV with her in that position and bare, getting smacks throughout as the mood strikes.
Bending over something, like the end of the bed, definitely has advantages for some implements though, as well as other activities that often come after spankings.

As you mentioned, I also think standing up is more of a quick grab-and-smack position. If one actually willingly stood still for it, it wouldn’t be nearly as believable (or fun!).

Personally I think your email sender is nuts. OTK is #1 on just about every list I know of. Canes and straps have their place, but the whole point of loving discipline is to have the spankee otk.

I think we can say over the knee is classic in that it is the only position that has its own acronym, OTK. I doubt anyone mistakes what OTK means when they see it.
Not to mention, it is the only position that leave little doubt of the impending action when used in a sentence. Strange would be the person who upon being told, “if you continue I’ll put you over my knee” had any lingering doubts about the coming spanking. “I’ll bend you over the table or put you across the pillows,” could mean several things and without elaboration might cause alarm in a lady you weren’t intimate with.
Finally, OTK is a position that doesn’t require cooperation to achieve a sound spanking. Even standing straight up the swats can be avoided but across the knee your only protection is reaching back your hand, which can be easily trapped and held out of the way. Your legs can tighten and relax, your head can flail and your fists can pound but with your weight supported on your hips, there is little that can be done to move the target.
OTK is personal without being intimate, it is acceptance without acquiescence, it is vulnerability without exposition. Properly done, OTK can lead to surrender, whereas, a standing spanking leads to resignation.

I’m really surprised by your findings as I myself have never seen such statistics before.
Over the last 20 years ALL surveys I have seen, stated that OTK is the most needed, wanted, used and given way of spanking.
To me a good spanking should be given straight on the bare buttocks, the spanker preferably seated on a straight backed chair or a stool.
I love to see the virgin white buttocks pinken, redden and finally turn very red…
To me an OTK spanking given in this way is the most realstic I can imagine. However, it is seldom seen as most models prefer ‘warm-ups’. Don’t blame them as otherwise it might be too painful, but ‘straight on the bare’ still looks the most serious.
When spanking was a common family affair (50/60ties), almost all spankers either spanked over clothes or on the bare. Seldom a mix…
So you’re asking for this Pixie..!
Next time you should get a bare bottom spanking straight away..! 
And OVER the KNEE. Regardless what those statistics say.

Amber Pixie, you are dead right. Over-the-knee is the traditional spanking position, and the only one I consider “classic.”
Eve Howard once wrote an article which described some of what I feel about OTK. Here is a short excerpt:
“[P]ain isn’t the touchstone of our fetish. The main thrill comes from the entire warm, tactile, mobile, over the knee experience itself. It’s being grasped, going over, being held, being bared, and finally, being spanked, scolded and loved….”
That tactile feeling I get while holding a girl over my knee — and that SHE gets, while being so held — is part of the turn-on, even before a single swat has landed.
It is much more intimate, and therefore much more sensuous, than if the “spankee” is standing up and her body is not against yours.

Hi Pixie……standing up spankings are definitely not the norm but they can be useful for a swift, sharp shock, for summary justice or if away from home.
I have spanked both my ladies standing up in stock cupboards in department stores….usually with skirts up on their knickered bottoms………when they needed swift discipline whilst out shopping!!!!!!

You make many valid points about the classic otk position, and I heartily agree with them all. The one point that must be included, albeit delicately, is the fact that a naughty barebottomed girl squirming across a male spankers lap provides a very nice “massage” of his lap while she kicks and struggles and…well, you get the idea. OTK is definitely the most visually pleasing, intimate, and entertaining for the spanker. However, bent over a chair, ottoman, arm of sofa, etc. runs a close second. I think the standing position is more suited for the spontaneous flirtatious swat in passing.

For the real life practice of spankings in my life…it is rare that one is given standing up unless it is that little reminder out of the blue or perhaps when we are out in “vanilla world”.
Other than that OTK or variances of that are used for me.
The biggest position used for me is bent over the huge rolled arm of the couch (but this is due in part to the fact in relaxation I love the longer leather strap and the CANE!!!!)
I also employ the over the stack of pillows in the middle of the bed.
For discipline, it has been traditionally OTK with only one showing of over the pillows (a rare time when canes were used as a discipline tool).
There are my two cents.

Pixie, OTK will always be the prefered position and to me the bare hand on the bare bottom completes it.
Variety is okay from time to time but I never want to go long without a good OTK, bare-bottom hand spanking.
In a movie that is what I want and look for also.

OTK is definitely the classic in both of our experiences. Growing up, a spanking was ~always~ OTK. Have to say though, we’ve grown to enjoy other positions more and more in recent years. Laying flat on a bed, or bent over a bed really have a lot of advantages too. OTK is still the classic though, especially when the spanking is on the serious side.

To me, the essence of a spanking is that instead of two people communicating mouth to ear, they “talk” palm to bottom.
While alternative positions have their place, what really communicates the kind of nurturing I like is having the spankee bottoms-up over a lap and a good, long, increasingly strong percussion using the spankee’s well-presented rear as the drum. The dance is a very special one and is a language of all its own.

I personally prefer OTK precisely because that’s NOT what my father did to me when I was little. What he did to me was abuse: I had to bend over my bed and take dozens of licks from his belt while he yelled at me. This was never on the bare bottom, but sometimes he missed and hit my bare legs below. I can remember one instance that resulted in bloody welts on my legs. I have no desire to reenact that as an adult (either as top or as bottom), nor to watch it on video.
On the other hand, going OTK with a loving woman, baring my bottom, getting a firm but not abusive spanking with a hand or small implement, submitting to someone who is in control of her emotions and respects my limits, gentle aftercare – delightful!

Spanker – That is a fun position too. My boyfriend quite often puts me in that position when he decides to spank me in the kitchen where we have no chairs to sit on. But as with standing up, there needs to be a careful size/strength pairing if there might be a bit of resistance!

I’m with you about being comfortable in whatever position we get in for a spanking. I go in knowing and willing to receive a very sore bottom, but I hate when end up with aching shoulders or sore ribs as well. A comfy bed and pillows sounds lovely!

The topic was brought up by a single emailer who presented his personal preference as being the truth for all, but it made me wonder if perhaps my impression that OTK was a classic position was perhaps influenced by my own preferences.
There are several reasons why sites often show models getting spanked over the clothing first beyond just wanting warmups (not all of us do). I know we’ve discussed this in email before, but perhaps I’ll save that topic for a future post.
Dan N. – You bring up an excellent point about the experience beginning before the first actual smack. Even getting into position has a huge emotional and psychological impact. When taken by the arm and pulled over the lap, I am thrilled with the anticipation of what is to come next. But if taken by the arm and thrown down across the table or thrust against the wall, I would either grow upset or emotionally shut down as it loses the element of any caring discipline and communicates only anger to me.

I always feel more secure in OTK but also more helpless when it starts to sting and he grabs my hands if I struggle. If he switches to over one knee and traps my trailing leg then OMG, that leads to major tearful distress in the real punishment situations I have had. Standing up spanks at corner time, diaper, over chair, desk etc, are all par for the course for me as a model, but as has been said before pillows can help raise the game for the spanker’s benefit and my sorry bottom after a spanking

Well, I have to say, you may be right about the ‘most real spankings’ part. For children, that is. Hell, most kids are actually more co-operative if allowed to remain standing. I know I was. Then again, I have a phobia of OTK, so that may have something to do with it.
Being forcefully held OTK for over 100 injections in one year can do that to a little kid. Especially when they’re fully capable of staying still, anyway.

I’ve been reading the comments, and i should have added this: It’s MUCH worse with a free-standing chair. Ever get the feeling you’re going to fall off a very precarious cliff? I guess that comes from the donkey delivering the spanking not caring enough to hold a person still. At least, I don’t remember them doing that. Then again, it was about ten years ago, the last time I actually let them. They tried when I was 15, but I point-blank refused, due to the phobia. If they’d moved position, I would probably have co-operated, but I can’t take a free-standing chair. I’m just too scared.

Ohh i remember getting a spanking…….but that was a while ago, i was only 6 but i remember it like it was yesterday, i broke Thingy’s lamp, (thingy is my mom btw) and my dad pulled me over his knee, he normally wouldn’t do that to us kids but Thingy bitched and complained about him not punishing us properly, he gave me a few swats then sent me to my room. I remember the look on his face too…He looked so hurt that he had to spank me

OTK most definately is the classic spanking position.
in my natal tongue czech, as well as in german – where i am living now – the term ‘to be put over someones knee’ is an idiom representing ‘ you are going to get spanked’
so if entire languages are set that way, who is mr e-mail to say otherwise. maybe he needs a sound spanking for leading you astray. on a side note. in the czech republic during my childhood in the the1970s, spankings were fairly usual. the OTK discipline wasnt limied to the hand, but also wooden spoons, shorter canes and rods, switches and belts were used OTK. so just to say, a misunderstanding in that manner could occur quite easily
