Every time I step outside, the flock of seagulls that camp out on my roof squawk at me. I’m pretty sure it’s because they see me as their personal chef. I feel bad for them when it’s cold out and worry they won’t be able to find enough to eat, so I’ll make them tunafish sandwiches or fish sticks if I have some around (I’m a sucker for poor little hungry animals, what can I say?). But today, I didn’t have either so I fed them Pepperidge Farm Goldfish. I figured they’re at least fish-shaped, right? But would the gulls like them? Apparently they do. A lot. It caused a big feeding frenzy, but after splitting a bag of original and a bag of pizza flavor, I think each one got their share. And now there are some very well fed and content seagulls with bad breath flying around.

awwwww That’s cool, sweetie. Be kind to animals.
It’s nice that they recognize you as a friend.

I collect a plastic bag of breakfast cereal – the remainders from boxes when there’s not enough left for a full serving – and then wait for the birds to make their return from the south and I spread the cereal around for them outside. (I live in a big apartment complex where this a real no-no, so I do it as sneakily as possible.) With it being late February, I should be seeing the birds again soon.

That’s so sweet. Glad to hear there are other animal lovers out there feeding the hungry birds.

Kind to animals always means kind to people, always a good gauge to judge character but “Pepperidge Farm Goldfish”? Is now a part of a Seagull’s foood chain?

Well, Pixie, after hearing some squawking in the trees (I live near Washington, DC), I put my bag of leftover cereal for the birds late Saturday afternoon. As of today, there’s very little left. I hope that means that the birds ate well – not that someone cleaned up after me.
Looking forward to reading about yesterday’s shoot.

Sounds like there are some very happy, well-fed birds around.
My regular customers just got another bag of Goldfish. Cheddar flavor this time. They enjoyed it greatly and gave their compliments to the chefs at Pepperidge Farms.
Maybe I’ll make them some tunafish tomorrow. We must be in for some snow. They only come around when bad weather is on its way.
